Kid’s Programs

 

Kente' Reads is a children’s reading program geared to ages 3 to 7 years. African American stories, music and crafts are featured to motivate the young students to embrace the concept of reading.  A light lunch is served and caregivers are required to stay with preschool children.  No fee required for the program.

 

Male 2 Male - Young African American males between the ages of 8 and 17 will find this program of interest.  The all male program is staffed by older men who serve as role models and mentors.  Structured activities are provided to help the young men build self-esteem and develop leadership skills which will help them become well rounded men. Some of the past Male 2 Males activities include:

 

 

Chat & Chew  - A peer group program for young women ages 11- 17.  The program is designed to provide guidance to young women dealing with questions surrounding self- esteem, relationships, career choices, sexuality and bodily functions.  Girls taking part in the program learn to make appropriate choices, prize their bodies and learn to become independent thinkers.  The program is staffed by mature women who serve as role models.   Some of the past Chat & Chew programs include:

 

Business of Art is a collaborative program between Kente′ Art Gallery and New London High School. The purpose of the program is to help young artists understand the concept of art as a viable business. Students will learn how a gallery operates and become familiar with the business aspect of marketing their art. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to sell their work which will be featured during exhibits at the Kente′ Art Gallery. In some cases students may be eligible to receive a stipend for participating in the program. Program slots are limited and are reserved for students ages 15 to 18.
