Martin Luther King BirthdayAnnual events are planned to commemorate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr.  For details on the event please call the center or check our on-line calendar for January.

 

Black History Month - During the month of February Kente' schedules activities each week highlighting a different aspect of African American culture and history.  Every effort is made to plan programs for all age groups ranging from pre-school children to adults.  The month’s events will conclude with our major celebration titled “Sankofa” and is held the last Saturday in February.  The event includes entertainment, arts & crafts for children and adults and a “Soul Food” luncheon.  For details please call the center or check our on-line calendar for February.

 

 

Juneteenthis the oldest known African American celebration commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and dates back to June 19th, 1865.  To learn more about Juneteenth visit the national website at www.juneteenth.com.  For more information on the Kente' sponsored events please call the center or check our on-line calendar for June.

 

Kwanzaais the unique African American celebration of family, community and culture based on seven important principals.  The event is celebrated December 26 thru January 1, and was founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966.  Kwanzaa was created to reaffirm and restore our roots in African Culture.  To learn more about Kwanzaa visit the website www.theofficialkwanzaawebsite.org   Kente' has at least two Kwanzaa celebrations it offers - - the Kwanzaa Bazzar in November and a Kwanzaa Celebration featuring the Nguzo Saba (seven principles) which is held the last week in December.

Mother/ Daughter - is a collaboration between, Kente' Cultural Center and  Women’s Voices a program sponsored by Hygenic Art, Inc.  The Program is designed to empower women through art.  It also encourages women from all backgrounds and ages to use art as a means of self expression.  Women come together and network as they create drawings, jewelry, paintings, and quilting and many other art forms of expression.
